David Rauer

BLUBBERNUGGET: THE VINYL

David Rauer’s Blubbernugget 01 is a book and a record in one. Rauer’s work as a ceramist is unconventional and often humorously confrontational. It allows for cracks and imperfections to take on a life of their own, allowing for free association and open-ended interaction. Its dogma is a distinct lack of dogma. Its stance on tradition is one of witty disrespect.

Blubbernugget 01 the 48-page book shows some of Rauer’s work. Colourful and at times spaced- out shapes and forms play on interconnection, recognisability and protocol. Rauer’s ceramics are at once hyper-concrete and dreamy. Their perspective is light-hearted with a touch of the absurd. They show their process of creation and require active perception.

Blubbernugget 01 the record compiles five recordings from performances Rauer organised, showing the highly participatory nature of his work. Meaning and the lack thereof are continuously confounded as the performers read short text fragments, written by Rauer, that indicate a possible way into and beyond his work.

_Cass. (Growing Bin, Emotional Response)
_Nikita von Tiraspol (Kontrapunkt, Knekelhuis)
_Metaboman (Musik Krause, Circus Company)
_Even Tuell (Workshop, Latency)

Four tracks by Cass., Metaboman, Even Tuell, and Nikita Von Tiraspol use sampled sounds from Ceramic instruments built by Rauer. In line with his work, all music here plays with conventions, turning Rauer’s gently dysfunctional perspective into free-flowing dance music that aims for the body. Cass., Metaboman and Even Tuell use a club music template, turning the sampled material into direct and surprising house tracks, conjuring up a surprising and fun contrast to Rauer’s spoken word pieces. Nikita Von Tiraspol builds a loopy, melodic half-lullaby that is equally driving and forward-intended. All four producers bring their own musical vision to the record and add greatly to Rauer’s open-ended and inclusive artistic universe.

The record and 48-page book are bound together in a white cardboard gatefold cover.
